My nerves were starting to show the closer we got to my parent’s house. It wasn’t that hot, but I was sweating and my grip on the steering wheel was way too tight to be considered casual. I avoided going home for a reason. The only reason I ever made myself go was because my mom guilt tripped me and I didn’t want to make her unhappy. Callum sat in the front seat, completely relaxed, his legs stretched out and one hand on my thigh. I was a little jealous. He was meeting his boyfriend’s parents for the first time and didn't have a care in the world, while I was a nervous wreck.

“I can feel the anxiety coming off of you, Brandon. What’s wrong? Are you not ready for me to meet them?”

I wrinkled my nose. “It’s not you. It’s… I’ve never brought a guy home before. I told you, my brothers are a little… difficult. I’m not sure I trust them to behave. My parents know how to be polite, though my dad might be a little awkward, but my brothers are idiots. I don’t want them to be rude to you.”

He rubbed my thigh reassuringly. “I can handle myself. I live with Felix. I know how to deal with obnoxious brothers. I won’t hold it against you if they act unruly, either.”

Felix wasn’t actually his brother, but I got his point. I let out a breath. I hadn’t realized that was something I was stressed about until he mentioned it. I didn't want my brothers chasing Callum away. He meant a lot to me. Meanwhile, my brothers were dicks on a good day.

As we pulled into the long driveway to my parents’ house, I took Callum’s hand and squeezed it tightly. “Thank you. Try not to hold it against them. They aren’t all bad. Sort of. I don’t know. I technically haven’t seen them in a few years.”

When I glanced at him, Callum’s lips were pressed together tightly. I could tell he was holding back his opinion. I originally invited him because he wanted to protect me from my brothers during the family visit and I liked the thought of having backup, but I didn’t want him to go in immediately hating them. I pulled to a stop next to my dad’s truck, shutting off the engine without getting out of the car.

“If you’re ever uncomfortable or want to leave, just tell me. I’d rather be hanging out with you than with them, anyway. We can go back home and spend the whole weekend in bed. You won’t hear any complaints from me.”

His face softened a little. “You may be able to read me, little one, but I can read you too. You want to be here. And I want you to enjoy your time with your family, so don’t worry about me. Unlike Felix, I know how to behave around humans. Let’s go inside. I’m sure your parents have been looking forward to you coming home.”

Glancing back at the house, I grimaced.
